Beauty and the Beast becomes a live show on Disney Cruise Line

This November, guests aboard the Disney Dream cruise ship will be able to experience “Beauty and the Beast” in a different light. The new production will celebrate pieces of the live-action film while weaving in elements of the award-winning animated feature.

The musical will take the stage in the 1,340 seat Walt Disney Theatre. Drawing inspiration from the live-action film, the stage musical uses a music box to guide spectators through the story from Belle’s French town to the Beast’s castle.

To bring the musical to life, Disney assembled a creative team led by director and choreographer Connor Gallagher. Gallagher collaborated with writer Sara Wordsworth and a collection of Broadway artists to create a new approach to the story.

“Beauty and the Beast” incorporates songs from the original film’s soundtrack by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman. The show also includes two new songs created for the live-action film by Menken and lyricist Tim Rice.

Costume designer Sarah Cubbage and puppet designer Lake Simons joined forces to give life to the objects of the musical. The two used innovative puppetry and elaborate costumes to bring characters to life.

“Beauty and the Beast” will debut during the Disney Dream voyage departing November 6, joining a lineup of Broadway-style stage productions aboard the ship, including “The Golden Mickeys” and “Disney’s Believe.” The Disney Dream sails three- and four-night cruises to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral, Florida.
